At about age 12, as a younger son, he left home to make his way in the world. He took work at a neighbor's farm until adulthood. [1] Afterward, he built a small factory to manufacture augers and steelyards. [2] He later manufactured silk. [3] After some years, he moved to Northampton, Massachusetts and worked in a silk mill, which he soon managed and eventually owned. [4] After some success, he moved to Conantsville (named for him) and operated another silk mill. At the same time, he was involved in buying and selling real estate. He also took interest in public improvement, even repairing roads at his own expense. [5]
He was also over six feet tall and weighed at least 230 pounds. [6] He was a generous man and twice represented the town of Mansfield in the State Legislature. [7] He was a Whig and later a Republican, and a Mason. He attended the Congregational Church. [8] Joseph was captain of the local militia and was known as Captain Conant. [9]
Joseph was born 28 March 1792 in Mansfield, Connecticut, son of Sylvanus Conant. [10]
Joseph died 10 October 1870 after a short illness (Bright's Disease). He was buried in Willimantic, Windham, Connecticut. [11]
Joseph was married three times. His first wife was Sophia Huntley, born in Mansfield. They had one daughter, Lucinda A. [12] Secondly, he married Parmelia Gaylord of Ashford, Connecticut. [13] His third wife was Caroline Williams, of Mansfield.
