The following abstract was submitted by Kathy Beritich:

Susan Alvis filed a Widow?s Claim [for a Civil War pension] on 22 Aug 1884. She and her daughter Flora E. Alvis were living in Turner, Clay Co IN at that time.

Susan Alvis was denied the pension on 3 Apr 1888. The denial was due to the contradictory facts as to the widow?s so-called marriage to the soldier and the lack of proof in regards to that marriage, the confusion on where the marriage took place, as well as the lack of proof that she divorced her first [or second] husband or that he died before she married Dixon.

Dixon Alvis was born in 1817 in KY. He was 44 years old when he volunteered for the service on 5 Sep 1861. He received a disability discharge 22 Aug 1863, and was described as 5?8? tall, dark complexion, black eyes, black hair. He died 21 Sep 1881. The Vigo Co IN Auditor?s Office certified the death in 1887.

On the original claim form, Susan Alvis stated that she married Dixon Alvis on 15 Oct 1849 in Terre Haute IN. In June 1887, she stated that she married Dixon in Clay Co IN sometime in the late autumn of 1848 and that she had no written proof since the person who married them was dead and the Clay Co courthouse burned down in 1851.

When she first filed Susan gave her maiden name as Susan Court. Then in 1887, she stated that she married her first husband, Lewis Court, 51 years previously (i.e., 1836) near New Albany IN and that he died 43 years previously (1844). In 1884 she gave her age as 62 (b 1822).

The pension rejection statement of 1888 states that Susan was married to one William Moore about seven months prior to her marriage to Dixon Alvis. Moore left her without obtaining a divorce. She then married or went to live with Dixon. This is referenced to a report from ?S.E. Division herewith.?
