Walter Robert Bridgforth[1] was born in March 1858 in Yazoo County, Mississippi, , the second child and second son of Robert Moore and Mariah Hutchinson Bridgforth. His mother died when he was quite young and his father remarried while he was a child. When he was about eight years old a half-brother was born.
He attended the Kentucky Military Institute and was a graduate of the University of Virginia School of Law. For a time he practiced law in Yazoo City, Mississippi. Because of the more healthful climate, he often spent the summers in the mountainous areas of southwestern Virginia and there he met Susan Pauline "Paulina" McConnell (13 Dec 1863 - 2 Sep 1933), the second daughter of Thomas Guilford McConnell, a prosperous businessman in Washington County, Virginia.
They made their home in Mississippi but often returned to Virginia for the summers. His brother-in-law Minter Jackson Prickett died there in January 1896 and “Cap’n” (as he was commonly called) and Paulina took quite a liking to his middle son, “Robbie,” born in 1887, and when he was in his early teens took him home with them to live with their own family, which comprised two boys and two girls. By 1900 he was a successful farmer and eventually became the manager and later the owner of three plantations.

"Family Events (taken from the Memiors of Allen C Bridgforth)."
"Walter Robert B ("Cap'n")was a child during the Civil War. As a boy, he was sent to preparatory school in New Orleans, living with his great aunt, Elizabeth Moore B who lived there with her husband, R.L. Adams. During that period, Jefferson Davis (who was a friend of the family) stayed for a period of time, after he was released from prison following the war. Jefferson Davis gave young Walter Robert an autographed photo which we still have. Walter Robert B[ridgforth] finished his later education at the Kentucky Military Academy and University of Virginia Law School. "Cap't" practiced law in Yazoo City for a short time, then began successfully managing the three family farming operations (Quiet Shades, Pope Place, and Guytown). In 1889, Cap't obtained majority interest in the Pickens Bank from a Mr. Peter James. His stepbrother, Louis Bridgforth ran the bank, which subsequently failed in 1913. In order to clear the resulting debts, Cap'n sold his part of Guytown (purchased by his grandmother following the death of her husband Robert Fargason B[ridgforth]) as well as Quiet Shades. He lived in Pickens running the Pope Place which he inherited from his great-aunt Amanda B[ridgforth]. The original Quiet Shades house was destroyed by a tornado in 1858, rebuilt, and was again destroyed by fire after the place was sold in 1913. Quiet Shades was owned by a Mr.Gilruth and Dr Fox during the period 1913 - 1937. In 1937, Cap't's son Allen C[abaniss Bridgforth] repurchased Quiet Shades and rebuilt the present Quiet Shades house in 1950-51."
