Biography

Mary (Mair) Stevenson was born in Scotland.

Mary was born on 29 Sep 1844 and baptised on 10 Oct 1844 in Ochiltree, Ayrshire, Scotland. She was the daughter of James Mair and Jean Wallace. ^[1]

In 1851 at the age of 6, and as a Scholar, Mary was living with her parents and siblings (Agnes, Margaret, John, and William)^[2] at Lemains, Ochiltree in Ayrshire, Scotland. Her father, James, was a Farmer Of 108 Acres Employing 1 Labourer, and 2 servants. ^[3]

Then in 1861 at the age of 16, Mary was living as a Farmer's Daughter, with her parents and siblings they were still living at Lemains, Ochiltree, Ayrshire. Her father was a Farmer of 150 Acres, and they had 1 servant . ^[4]

Mary met Allan Stevenson in Ayrshire, Scotland and they went on to marry in Ochiltree, Ayrshire, Scotland on the 9 June 1869, when she was 25 and he was 33. ^[5]

They had 6 Children (4 girls, 2 boys)

Following their 1869 marriage, in 1871, Mary and Allan were living with their 5mth old Jennie. Mary was 26 and her husband 35. He was a Farmer of 280 Acres All Arable while employing 3 Labourers and 41 boys. They lived at Borland Mains Farm, Ochiltree, Ayrshire. ^[12]

In 1881 the Stevenson family were still living at Borland Mains Farm, in Old Cumnock , Ayrshire. Mary and Allan had all 6 of their children - Jeanie, Allan, James, Maggie, Agnes and Jessie living with them and the 4 oldest were at school. Allan continued with his Farm of 280 acres and they had 2 servants. ^[13]

Sadly Mary died in 1884 at Old Cumnock, Ayrshire, Scotland at the age of 39.^[14] She is buried in Cumnock New Cemetery, Cumnock, East Ayrshire, Scotland. Find A Grave: Memorial #199586579^[15]
