Biography

Maude was born in 1868. She was the daughter of John Staveley and Mary Lanceley.[1]
When she was fifteen, Maude was witness for her sister Maria at Maria's wedding to Joseph Hodgkinson.[2]
Maude married G. Herbert Wood in Montreal in 1892.[3] Maude's husband Herb was co-founder of Wood Gundy. They travelled extensively and had homes in Britain and Toronto.[4]
By the end of the First World War (and probably considerably earlier) Maude's nephew Bill Cuttle was staying with them. He had been born in California but his mother (Maude's sister Louisa) died when he was three. And he was orphaned by the time that he was twelve.
Her last trans-Atlantic crossing was aboard the Empress of Scotland in 1928.[5] She passed away at the beginning of 1929. Her funeral was held on Saturday, January 5, 1929 and she was buried in Mount Pleasant Cemetery, Toronto.[6]

Obituary

MARKED TRIBUTES PAID TO LATE MRS. G. H. WOOD
Impressive Funeral of Life Long Church Worker.
HAD MANY INTERESTS
Organized Mission Circles and Helped Establish Y.W.C.A.
The funeral of Mrs. G. Herbert Wood took place to Mount Pleasant Cemetery Saturday afternoon from her late residence, 36 Castle Frank Road. The service was of a most impressive character and was under the direction of Rev. E. B. Lanceley of Eaton Memorial Church, an uncle of the deceased. Dr. Lanceley was assisted by Rev. Trevor Davies, Rev. H. S. Osborne and Rev. Dr. Solondt acting pastor of Rosedale Church. The spacious home was crowded with friends who had shared in the activities of the deceased in both church and community. The number of ministers present gave evidence of their appreciation of her devoted life.
In the absence of her pastor, the Rev. Ronald MacLeod of Rosedale Church, and of Rev. Bruce Hunter, of London, a former pastor, the address was given by Rev. Dr. T. W. Neal, who was closely associated with Mrs. Wood's work in the downtown section of the city.
In the course of his address, Rev. Dr. Neal stated that Mrs. Wood's native heath was Montreal, and from her youth she had been a devoted Christian and interested in all phases of welfare and church work. During the early years of her residence in Toronto Mrs. Wood was associated with the Yonge Street Methodist Church, where Mr. Wood and his honored father had served with distinction. For thirty-five years Mrs. Wood was a Sunday School teacher at Montreal and at Yonge Street and Central Churches. She organized mission circles at Central and Rosedale Churches. As an evidence of the abiding character of her work a floral tribute was sent, the card signed by 32 of the girls of the Central Church mission circle who, years ago, had come under her influence.
Mrs. Wood, who took an active interest in the Ladies' Golf Club, specialized in work among young women, and in association with Mrs. D. A. Dunlap, Mrs. E. R. Wood and others was instrumental in the culmination of the scheme for the establishment of a women's residence at Victoria College. She had an important share in the establishment of the McGill Street headquarters of the Y.W.C.A. and the West Toronto and Danforth Avenue branches.
From 1913-24, Mrs. Wood was chairman of the Women's Board of Social Service of the Methodist Union of Toronto, and assisted in the Travelers' Aid work for soldiers' dependents.
Another phase of work to which Mrs. Wood gave her whole-hearted sympathy and support was that carried on at the Victor Home for unfortunate women. For this no appeal was made to either the church or the men of the church but in her quiet way, Mrs. Wood made possible, magnificent properties and much Christ-like service. This was done by personal contact and each deserted woman and child that came to the Home received from her the loving sympathy of a gracious Christian woman.
Dr. Neal referred also to the place Mrs. Wood had taken as help-mate to her husband, remarking that Mr. Wood had repeatedly spoken of his great indebtness to his wife, for her wise counsel and support.
The chief Mourners were her husband, a daughter, Mrs. Ewart V. Lindsay, a sister. Mrs. Joseph Hodgkinson, and a brother, Arthur W. Staveley. At the cemetery the services were conducted by Rev. Dr. Lanceley and Rev. Dr. Pidgeon.
The honorary pall-bearers were E. R. Wood, A. E. Ames, J. H. Gundy, J. B. Holden, K.C., Colonel F. H. Deacon, James Wood, W. G. Wattron, S. J. Moore. Active pall-bearers were George L. Thompson, Herbert S. Hodgkinson, Walter Sarjeant, Barrie; Dr. Douglas G. McIlwraith, Hamilton; W. J. Cuttle and W. A. Lydiatt, all immediate relatives of the deceased.[7]
