Biography

Jesse Brooks was born on 13 Jul 1790, in Cheshire, New Haven County, Connecticut.^[1][2]

Jesse married Myra Tuttle on 18 Jul 1816, in Cheshire.^[3][4]

Their children:

1. Edmund Tuttle Brooks (b. 12 Jan 1817, Cheshire)^[5]
2. Jesse Royce Brooks (b. 1 Oct 1820, Cheshire)^[6]
3. Caroline Nancy Brooks (b. 13 Oct 1824, Cheshire)

Jesse Brooks died in Cheshire at the age of 35 (in his 36th year), on 5 Jun 1826, according to his gravestone in Cheshire Cemetery. He was killed while helping with the construction of Cheshire's new Congregational church.^[7]

Research Notes

Beach, in his History of Cheshire, Connecticut, apparently transcribed the date of death on Jesse's gravestone incorrectly, as "November 3, 1826," rather than "June 5, 1826."^[8] This error was later picked up by Barber in his collection of vital records for Connecticut.^[9] That Beach was working from the gravestone for this record is evident from the fact that he added "E 36 y." to the date of death, which was also engraved on the stone in exactly that way. Indeed, Jesse would have been in the 37th year of his life, not the 36th, if he had died in November of 1826.
