Biography

John Quinby was born before 1633, if he was 21, when his daughter, Deborah, was born in 1654. John immigrated, with his father, William and his brother, Thomas, to Massachusetts, about 1638 [1] and on to new settlements in Connecticut, where they appeared among the first seventeen families at Stratford. [2]

John moved to the fledgling settlement of Westchester (called Oostdorp by the Dutch) in New Netherlands by 1 Jan 1657 when he signed the oath of allegiance to Dutch rule.[3] John was one of the six magistrates appointed in 1662 by Governor Stuyvesant. With Edward Jessup, John represented the town of Weschester in 1665, at the First New York Assembly at Hempstead, convened by English Governor Richard Nicolls. [4] John, with four other persons, was a patentee of Westchester in 1667.

In 1685, he bought land from John and Sarah Turner.[5]

John married Deborah Haight. Children of John and Deborah are:

  • Deborah Quinby, born at Stratford, Connecticut
  • John Quinby
  • Charles Quinby, died intestate before 1705 at Westchester
  • Josiah Quinby
  • Mary Quinby
  • David Quinby,
  • Elizabeth Quinby, married Erasmus Alton

My grandmother, Mary Quinby Hayden, descendent of William Quinby via his son John's son Josiah. She is one of the last entries in the Henry Cole Quinby volume (s) re his Geneological History of the Quinby/Quimby family. It also mentions she Married Edwin Hayden, direct descendent of William Hayden in listed in Jabez Haskell Hayden book of Connecticut LIne. We are kin!!!! My dna on Herritage with an interesting result which may be as a direct result of John and/or son's business ventures. Need someone who can track their dna back to specific ancestors further than mine allows.
