Grandfather was Col. Harry Hulen, organizer and commander of the 347th Combat Engineers, who served in Patton’s 3rd Army in Europe (now known as the 18th engineer Brigade).
He was known for his ability to defeat red tape, notably unconventionally transporting his command across the Atlantic within a week of activation by “hitch-hiking”.
He is credited with commanding the first rail bridging of the Rhine during the capture of Germany in WWII:

He was known for his humorous humility following this achievement in the book “Lucky forward, The History of Patton's Third U.S. Army”:
