Biography

William was born in Rowley, Mass., in 27 Aug 1726, the son of Samuel and Susannah (Perley) Stickney,[1] "William Stickney ye son of Samuel and Susannah his wife born August ye 27th 1726."[2] He was christened 27 Aug in Georgetown, Mass.[3] He died in 1808.[4] He is buried at Howard Street Burial Ground at Salem, Mass. [5]
He gave notice to married Mary Sawyer in Newbury, Massachusetts on 28 Jan 1743, "William Stickney informed of his intent of marriage with Mary Sawyer on the 28th of January - 1743/4 & I posted up their intent as the law direct." [6] and married her on 13 Jan 1743 in Newbury, Mass.[7][8]

Genealogical Sketch

[9] William was baptized on 28 Aug 1726 in Rowley, MA
William Stickney, son of Samuel, married Mary Sawyer, daughter of Benjamin Sawyer of Amesbury, on 18 Feb 1743.
(Vital records reports Mary’s mother as Elizabeth Jameson, both parents to be from Newbury, and marriage date of 13 Feb 1743.)
William owned the Covenant of Rowley First Church and renamed it the Byfield Church.
William was a Sgt. in Capt. Jos. Smith’s Co., serving “up the river in Quebec”, from Apr – Nov 1759.
On 19 Mar 1776, he was appointed by the Town of Rowley, one of a Committee of Safety.
The bio is per the reference: “The Stickney Family, a Genealogical Memoir of the Descendants of William and Elizabeth Stickney, from 1637 to 1869” by Matthew Adams Stickney, printed by the Essex Institute Press of Salem, Mass, “For the Author” in 1869.
The cemetery opened in 1801 so William could indeed be buried here; however, the date of the tomb’s purchase of “1826”, as inscribed on the marker and recorded in VRs, after he died, is a problem. Perhaps the bodies were moved, or this is a coincidence and this tomb is for another couple. I have recorded this couple as if they are buried here, but this is an unsettled matter.
