"Philip Tolbert Beddoe, head of the American Branch of the Beddoe Family, was born of noble England parentage, and entitled to bear a Coat of Arms. After settling in his East Tennessee home he became a prominent Leather Goods manufacturing merchant. From this place he removed to East Texas which become his final Earthly habitation. While conservative to established forms, he was no less progressive and aggressive in all things pertaining to the betterment of humanity. A man of engaging address and well qualified to be a leader of the people. Clannish as to his own family relatives, he was also careful to admonish them to deeds of charity and benevolence to all people. He was a typical English Gentleman, exemplifying in his everyday life the virtues of friendship, love and truth. He governed his family with kindness and firmness that engendered respect and obedience. A man of remarkable will power and self government. To illustrate this, an incident of his quitting the use of tobacco in his old age is recalled. It was in bleak December, so cold that a big fire of logs was kept burning in the sitting room. And one night, the large family, gathered in the circle, witnessed the unusual sight of an old man giving up his pipe for an example to his oncoming generation. He quietly opened a place in the red hot embers and placed therin his pipe, tobacco, pouch and smoking set, and with his shovel covered them up with burning coals of fire; and announced to us that this was the last time he would ever use tobacco. And admonished his grand children to never use tobacco. Smoking had been a favorite pastime with him for most of his long life, and it was thought that he would not hold out to his resolution, but for two or three years longer, even to his death, he never used tobacco again. At a ripe old age, loved and honored by all who knew him, he died in the full assurance of the faith, and was buried at Sabinetown, Texas."
