Merchant in Portland, ME
info from Browns, an old newspaper from October 1909, via the Maine Historical Society.
Saint John (#1) (there are many in our family, so I had to number them) Smith was born to Marcy and Ezra Smith in Topsham, Maine on January 28, 1799. The boy was baptized John, but he soon realized that there were too many JohnSmiths in the world, so he prefixed Saint to John and was ever after known and answered to the name of Saint John Smith. Subsequently, according to the Maine State Legislature Archives of 1820 - 1825, his father Ezra legally changed his name toSaint John, too. Saint John attended Hebron Academy in Maine and even as a young boy, he was hard working and had a keen eye for business. By his mid-twenties, he had amassed a sizable sum for a young man in those days from backbreaking work mostly in sawmills, including the challenging job of river driving the logs. When he reached his twenty-fifth birthday, he decided that lumbering was a rather limited business, so he set out from his parents comfortable house in Hanover to make his own way in the world.
