Biography

John de Beauchamp was a son of Richard de Beauchamp of Holt, Worcestershire.[1][2][3][4][5]

His mother may have been Eustache, surname unknown.[2][5][6]

His father died in 1327 and John was his son and heir, age 8, hence John was born c 1319.[4]

Marriage and Children

He married Isabel, surname unknown.[5]

Children:

  • John de Beauchamp (died 1388)[3][5] [Cited: "Exch. Accts. (Wardrobe and Household), bdle. 393, no. 11, fol. 74 d., where mention is made of both him and his son"]

Career

Holt, Worcestershire:[5] "John [de Beauchamp] was in the sea fight at Sluys in 1340, and served in the French wars 'from the time of the passage to Normandy all the while the king was abroad'; he fought in the king's company at Crecy, and was subsequently at the siege of Calais. He had returned to England by Michaelmas 1348, at which time he bought a small estate at Hanley Child, and settled it on himself and his wife Isabel for life, with successive remainders to his sons William and Thomas. He was one of the knights of the shire in the Parliament of 1352. Afterwards, however, he went back to the wars in France, and seems to have served in the Poictiers campaign; in 1357 he obtained a grant of £12 yearly for his good service. He was still living in 1361, but seems to have died before 1367. He was succeeded by his son of the same name, who married, about 1370, Joan daughter and heir of Robert Fitz With, then a minor in the king's wardship."

"John de Beauchamp, of Holt, who had served in the King's retinue from the date of the passage to Hogges in Normandy, and at Cressy and Calais, all the time the King was abroad. Dated 1st October, 26 E. Ill, and allocated under Wigorn on the Pipe Roll of 25 E. III.[7]

Death

He was living in 1361 but appears to have died by 1367.[5]

It is unclear if the following refers to this John de Beauchamp or his son: 1366, Grant to John de Bello Camp, Lord of Holt, of lands in Martley.[8]

Research Notes

Dugdale[1], the Dictionary of National Biography (1908 Edition)[9] and the pedigree in Complete Peerage[2], 'Beauchamp of Kidderminster', which [in footnote d] referenced Dugdale for the early part of the pedigree, omitted a generation between Richard de Beauchamp and John de Beauchamp, Baron of Kidderminster.
