James Melvin Hills born March 8, 1819 in Pinckney, Lewis County, NY. Apparently the fourth child of Ebenezer B. and Hannah Hills. The Hill family bible identifies him as James Melvin Hill married to Sarah Patch of Danbury, Conn. James and Sarah had two children: Melvin and Cora born in Erie County Ohio. According to records on file in the courthouse in Erie County Ohio, James Hills and Sarah Patch were married April 30, 1844.
By 1850 the family had moved to the community of Many in Sabine Parish Louisiana. Here seven more children born, namely: Jessie, Annamore, Sarah, Ned, Emma, Edde and Annita.
James was listed as a “Wheel Wright” in the 1850 Census. The census of 1860 listed his occupation as school teacher.
James and his son Melvin were both soldiers who fought for the Confederacy. James Melvin served as a Sergeant, 6th. Calvary.
In 1865 he was a prisoner of war. He died August 7, 1865. Since James was only 46 when he died it could be reasoned that he may have died from war wounds.
