Biography

Possible father of Herman & Godtfridus Gross Schulte.

Dietrich and Ursula are our direct ancestors. They are also the direct ancestors of Ludwig Hengesbach (1677-1736) who became Abbot Nikolaus in Weddinghausen in Arnsberg (1726-1736). Abbot Nikolaus' crest consists of a white stallion jumping over a stream. A drawing of this crest is found in St. John the Evangelist Church in Eversberg, in the lower left hand corner of a painting of the Last Supper that the Abbot donated to his parish church. Dietrich and Ursula are also the direct ancestors of the family of Cardinal Franz Hengsbach (1910-1991), the first Bishop of Essen (1957-1991). The Cardinal was a close, personal friend of Pope John Paul II. Sister Angelica visited with him both in Essen and in Rome. She was present when he was created a cardinal of the church in St. Peter's Cathedral at the Vatican. The Cardinal's crest has a black rather than white stallion. He change the color in honor of the coal miners in his diocese. Our contemporary Hengesbach crest consists of Abbot Nikolaus' stream and Cardinal Hengsbach's horse, white as it is in Nikolaus' crest. The Cardinal's brother, Father Paul Hengsbach, is a retired priest living in Germany. HIs other brother Gottfried, who was manager of a credit union, lives in Arnsberg and a third brother,Konrad, who was very active in the international peace movement is deceased
