Note
Note: Growing up, he was called up on to do his share of work on the family farm, while his educational advantages were those afforded in the primitive schools of the locality, the same being maintained principally on the subscription plan, while his attendance confined principally to winter months. After the death of this father Mr. Reynolds purchased the home farm, and he thereafter gave his attention to agricultural pursuits until 1865, making many improvements on the farm and having 225 acres of as good land as can be found in the section of the state. In March, 1865, he removed to the village Eaton Rapids, where he purchased his present residential property, which has thus represented his home for two score years. During the first years of his residence in the village he gave his attention principally to the buying and shipping of livestock, and then he engaged in the grocery business, entering into partnership with William Montgomery, with whom he was associated for two years, at the expiration of which he erected a substantial building and engaged in the dry goods business, having one of the best mercantile establishments in the town. He continued this enterprise for nine years, with excellent success, and in the meanwhile also built up a prosperous business in the buying and shipping of grain and other produce, while he still continued identified with the grocery trade in connection with the later enterprise for ten years after he retired from the dry goods business. He remained actively in the produce business until January, 1900, when he disposed of his interests in this line and has since been virtually retired. He is a director in the Michigan State Bank, of Eaton Rapids, and has large capitalistic and landed interests in the County in whose development from the virgin wilds he had personally witnessed. He recalls the cutting of the first brush on the island in preparation for the erection of the grist mill, which was the nucleus of what is now the beautiful and thriving little city of Eaton Rapids. In politics Mr. Reynolds was originally an old line Whig but upon the organization of the Republican party he transferred his allegiance to the same, having long continued a loyal supporter of its cause, but being now identified with the prohibition party and voting in accord with his conscience and convictions. He is identified with the Masonic fraternity. Her served as president of Eaton Rapids under the village governmental system, and since its incorporation as a city he has served as a member of the board of alderman. - The past and present of Eaton County, Michigan, historically together with biographical sketches of its leading and prominent citizens and illustrious dead.
