William Allington was the son of William Allington, and his wife, Joan, died 27 February 1445, the daughter and heir of William Burgh of Barningham (Suffolk).[1] Joan was the widow of — Barnes.[2]
William was the brother of:
John Allington, married Mary, the daughter and heir of John Ansty, and they had no surviving children;[2]
William also had a younger bastard half-brother, Robert married to Joan Argentine, the sister of his wife, Elizabeth Argentine.[1] Robert married as his second wife, Mary, the daughter of Richard Breos of Norfolk.[2]
"WILLIAM ALLINGTON, Esq. high sheriff the counties of Cambridge and Huntington in reign of Edward IV., said to derive from Sir Hildebrand de Alington, under-marshal to William the Conqueror at Hastings, m. Elizabeth only daughter and heiress of John de Argentine, Baron Argentine, and acquired by her the manor of Wymondeley, in the county of Hertford held in serjeanty, by service of presenting the first cup at the coronation of the kings of England; which was claimed and allowed at the coronation of James II., and has ever since been performed the lords of that manor."[3]
Elizabeth Argentein was born at Halesworth, Suffolk, England, on 11 May 1411 and baptised there in the church of St Mary on 12 May.[4] Elizabeth was married to William Alyngton, jr, by 4 November 1427 when a Writ was issued to determine the Proof of age in Suffolk of Elizabeth wife of William Alyngton, junior, regarding her inheritance as one of the sisters and heirs of John son of John son of William Argentein, knight, who died a minor in the wardship of Henry V.[4] Burke incorrectly states that Elizabeth was the only child of her father and that he was was Baron Argentine.[3] Elizabeth and her sister Joan were coheirs of their brother John Argentein who died a minor in the wardship of Henry V.[5] Elizabeth was also the heir of her sister Joan who died on 15 May 1429.[6] Their father John Argentein was not fifth Baron Argentine because he predeceased his father, William Argentein knight.[7]
William had children:
John Allington of Horseheath, aged thirty-one at his father's death in 1459, married Mary, daughter of Laurence Cheyne (Cheney[2]) of Fen Ditton and Long Stanton (Ca'mbs):[8]
William Allington of Bottisham, younger of two sons, became Speaker in two of Edward IV's parliaments, married Joan, one of the three daughters of John Anstey senior of Stow-cüm-Quy, in the chapel of the manor of Holme Hall in that parish, by a licence issued by William Grey, Bishop of Ely, on 9 January 1457;[1]
William's father died on 19 October 1446 and was buried at Horseheath, where a 'brass' describes him as Treasurer of Ireland and Treasurer of Normandy. William, his son and heir, was sheriff of Cambridgeshire and Huntingdonshire for a second time in 1450-1 and was a JP in Cambridgeshire from 1439 continuously until 1458, and from 1455 to his death in 1459 in Suffolk.[1]
