He was the son of Donald MacDonald. His birthdate is a rough estimate based on other family members. Alexander took part in Montrose's campain against the Covananters, 1644-46. He was tacksman at Skirinish on the Isle of Skye. He passed away in 1680. He was married to a daughter of James MacDonald, tacksman of Ostaig and neice of Sir Donald MacDonald, 1st Baronet of Sleat.
