Biography

"Gregory Clarke's daughter married Thomas Manning J.P. of Suffolk. On an inner window of the Bridge St. house looking South east, are scratched the names "william manning1753 and Suzanne Manning" and they can still be seen (1934). This and the house adjoining it were bought by the Rev. J.C.Ives, who pulled down the ancient residence of Lady Harriet Boyce in 1777,on his marriage to Miss Williams, and built a new house on the site, the whole forming the present building. It was in this house that Chateaubriand stayed in the winter of 1784, and in the large upper room that Ives allowed him to give lessons to his pupils. Can you add any information on Suzannah Clarke?
