Mathew was born in April 1845 in Mercersburg, Franklin, Pennsylvania.

In the 1850 census, Matthew (age 5) was in Warren Township, Franklin, Pennsylvania, United States.^[1]

In the 1870 census, Matthew (age 25) was the head of household in Peters Township, Franklin, Pennsylvania, United States.^[2]

In the 1880 census, Hugh (age 35), Carpenter, was the married head of household in Van Buren, Jackson, Iowa, United States.^[3]

In the 1900 census, Mathew (age 55) was the married head of household in Omaha, Douglas, Nebraska, United States.^[4]

Matthew died in 1922 in Omaha, Douglas, Nebraska, United States.^[5]

Mathew died at the age of 76 on 23 March 1922 in Omaha, Douglas, Nebraska.

In 1860, he was a laborer living Montgomery Township, Franklin County, Pennsylvania, but later took up the occupation of printer. He stood 5' 5" tall and had dark hair and blue eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Chambersburg September 8, 1861, and mustered into federal service at Pittsburgh October 11 as a private with what became known as Independent Battery B, Pennsylvania Light Artillery. He re-enlisted as a Veteran Volunteer December 20, 1863, at Chattanooga, Tennessee, and promoted to corporal, date unknown, and to sergeant June 14, 1865. He honorably discharged with the battery October 12, 1865, at Victoria, Texas.

He married Anna Margaret Shatzer in 1867 and fathered Margaret Blanche (b. 12/??/68 - married Frank H. French), Clarence Kennedy (b. 02/13/68), Alice Jane "Jennie" (b. 07/31/69 - married Austin Case), Frank T. 01/25/74), Nettie May (b. 08/??/78 - married Edward Leroy Platner), Edith S. (b. 09/??/79 - married Claude Asbury Rodman), and Arthur H. (b. 09/09/83). By 1880, he was living in Jackson County, Iowa.
