Biography

William (Ruthven) Ruthven of Ruthven is a member of Clan Ruthven.

William was the second son of son of Walter of Ruthven and Cecilia, daughter of Gilbert (Gille Brigte), Earl of Strathearn. His year of birth can be estimated to shortly after the marriage of his parents which likely took place c. 1220. A charter is noticed, dated to between 1223 and 1230, where Robert, earl of Strathearn, has granted and by his charter established, to Walter son of Alan and Cecilia his sister and her heirs, that donation which Sir Gilbert, earl of Strathearn, his father, made to the aforesaid Walter, with his sister, of the land of Coulgask (Perthshire). [1] The marriage must therefore have occurred prior to the death of Gilbert (Gille Brigte), Earl of Strathearn or before 1223 or c. 1220. This date is used to fix the year of birth at c. 1225.

He is noticed as chamberlain to Malise, Earl of Strathearn, the brother of his mother.[2]

As Sir William of Ruthven, he witnessed two charters in January 1267-68, thus suggesting his brother had died by that date and he had inherited the titles.[3]

He did homage to King Edward i. in 1291 and 1296.

As William of Ruthven, Lord of that Ilk, he, about 1298, confirmed the charter of his father, Walter, son of Alan, to the lands of Tibbermore (Perthshire).[4][5] This Charter also has Walter, his eldest son, noticed as Walteri filii mei et heredis. He likely died shortly. Cowan suggests he died 1298.[6]
