Nancy was a member of the distinguished Hawkins family. The first wife of John Sevier, the first governor of TN, was a Hawkins. Her name was Sarah Hawkins. The mother of David Crockett was also a Hawkins. Her name was Rebecca Hawkins.
Nancy was sensitive and kind. She often became homesick. Like most pioneer families, the family had wild beasts of the forest as a constant dread. She was uncomfortable when panthers and bears strayed near the home. The home was in the central part of Tennessee. It was at the foot of the mountain in Cumberland Valley.
