Biography

"Charles Howard was born on 1 December 1720, the posthumous son of Henry Charles Howard and Mary Aylward." [1] According to the Will of his mother, Mary Howard, this is incorrect. Charles was not born after the death of his father Henry Charles Howard. In her Will Mary names her children as : eldest son Henry, then Mary, Catherine, Frances, and Charles Howard born in her husband's lifetime and then Thomas who was born since her husband's death.

He married Catherine Brockholes, daughter of John Brockholes, on 8 November 1739 at Worksop Manor.

He succeeded to the title of 10th Duke of Norfolk on the death of his second cousin, Edward Howard 9th Duke of Norfolk on 20th September 1777.[2]

On 18th March 1780 'The Most Noble Charles Duke of Norfolk' made his Will. It was not very long, he preferred to be buried at Dorking, there were bequests to his wife Catherine Duchess of Norfolk, and his son the Earl of Surrey was the residuary legatee and also he was named, with Vincent Eyre of Sheffield, Esq., joint executor. The Will was proved on 12th September 1786.[3]

He died 'at about one o'clock, at his house at St James Square' [4]at the age of 65, and he was buried at St Martin Dorking in Surrey on 7th September 1786 - "His Grace Charles Duke of Norfolk".
