Biography

Mark Anthony Galliardello was a court musician from Venice, originally sent for by Henry VIII of England.

Mark Anthony Galliardello served as musician to Henry VIII and his three successors. [1]

Mark Anthony Galliardello "was a man not only of considerable eminence in his time but highly esteemed." He served as churchwarden at Holy Trinity Minories in 1569 and 1570. His son-in-law, John Lanier, served in the same position in 1590 and 1591. [2]

Mark Anthony Galliardello and his wife Margery had four children, all baptized at Holy Trinity, Minories, in London: [3]

  1. Lucretia Galliardello, "daughter to Mr. Mark Anthony Galliardello, musician to the Queen's Majestie," was baptized on 8 April 1563. She marrried Mr. Henry Truches, "musician to the Queens majestie" on 14 January 1579/80. Lucretia Troches was buried at the Minories on 20 September 1584. She was only about 21 years old.
  2. "Mark Anthony Galliardello, the sonne of Mr. Mark Anthony Galliardelllo," was baptized on 7 August 1565. Mark is not mentioned in his mother's 1611 will, and so presumably was dead by then.
  3. "Francis Galliardello the daughter of Mr. Marke Anthony Galliardello," was baptized 4 November 1566. She married John Lanier on 12 October 1585 at Holy Trinity, Minories. [4] Francis is named in her mother's 1611 will, and so presumably was alive at that time.
  4. "Ceasar Galliardello the sonne of Mr. Mark Anthonye Galliardello," was baptized 1 July 1568. Caesar was alive in 1611 when his mother wrote her will.

Mark Anthony died in 1585. The Parish Register of the Holy Minories says of him "Mr. Mark Anthony Galliardello, musician and servant unto the Queen's Majestie, was buried in good name and fame, and most godly respect of all his neighbors, the 17 Day of June 1585." [5]

His widow, Margery, outlived him by 25 years.
