Biography

Marianne was born in 1788 in Maryland, USA. She was the daughter of Richard Caton and Mary 'Polly' Carroll and the granddaughter of Charles Carroll of Carrollton, a signatory to the Declaration of Independence.

Marianne married Robert Patterson and became the sister-in-law of Elizabeth (Patterson) Bonaparte. Three years after being widowed, Marianne married secondly, the British statesman Richard Colley Wellesley, 2nd earl of Mornington, 1st Marquess Wellesley (1760–1842) and viceroy of Ireland, in 1825. He was the brother of the legendary military commander Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of Wellington, who became prime minister of Great Britain and is believed to have previously been Marianne's paramour. There are certainly suggestions that he was very fond of her.

Marianne and her sisters became known as the 'American Graces' in English society.

She passed away at her apartments in the palace of Hampton Court in 1853[1].
