Biography
John was born in Sumter, SC and grew up there. He was educated at the University of South Carolina, earning a B.S. degree. As a young man he was fascinated by aviation, collecting newspaper clippings about famous aviators and sometimes visiting nearby airfields to watch planes take off or land.
He served during WWII from 27 June 1941 - 7 August 1945 in the U.S. Army, winning a Bronze Star medal for his accomplishments in intelligence services. He was in Normandy, Northern France, Ardennes, Rhineland and Central Europe.
After the war he moved to Columbia, SC, where he worked at the IRS. He met Nelle Manuel there; they married in 1950, living in Columbia until his tragic early death.
He was a member of the Masons.
