Major John Reid, in the 1600s, was induced by King James I of England to colonize Northern Ireland. Lands there had been forfeited to the British Crown on the failure of the Irish Rebellion, instigated by Phillip II, King of Spain. Thus the Reids left their Scottish homeland and ventured out into Ireland. (I believe that he is my 11 times great grandfather.)
