MANAWATU STANDARD, VOLUME XLIV, ISSUE 769, 27 JULY 1923
By the death of Mrs Anne Diffey, which occurred at the residence of her daughter, Mrs E. Sims, 247 Church street, at an early hour yesterday morning. New Zealand loses a colonist of nearly 50 years' standing. The deceased lady was born in Herefordshire, England, 83 years ago and was married to the late Mr William Diffey before she and her husband came out to New Zealand in the ship Wairoa in 1877. On arrival Mr Diffey was employed in the construction of the railway between Wanganui and Palmerston North. After 25 years' service he retired on superannuation and the couple went to reside in Halcombe, where they helped to bring about the establishment of the English Church there. Mr Diffey was one of the promoters and managing director of the Halcombe Cooperative Dairy Company. Her husband dying four years ago, Mrs Diffey came to live with her daughter in Palmerston North. Up till ten days before her death, the deceased lady had enjoyed good health and her passing will be deeply regretted by all with whom she had come in contact. Of a family of ten children, five daughters and two sons are now living. The daughters are: Mesdames Holgerson (Palmerston North), Griffin (Marton), Blick (Wanganui), Harris (Wanganui), and Sims (Palmerston North). The two sons are Messrs E. H. Diffey (New Plymouth), and H. E. Diffey (Sanson). There are 38 grand-children and 33 great-grand-children. The funeral will take place to-morrow, when the body will be taken to the Halcombe cemetery for interment.
