Sir William held the manor and lands of Ashby Ledger in Northamptonshire.
He had suffered years of imprisonment/house arrest for his Roman Catholic faith, and in 1581 had been tried in the Star Chamber alongside William Vaux, 3rd Baron Vaux of Harrowden, and his brother-in-law Sir Thomas Tresham, for harbouring the Jesuit Edmund Campion.
Sir William Catesby, of Lapworth, Warwickshire, had a son by his wife Anne Throckmorton, Robert Catesby, who was one of the notorious Gunpowder Plotters.
