DEATH OF MRS S. C. BEMIS - Comes From an Attack of Grip, Which Developed Into Pleurisy Julia Emiline Skeele Bemis, widow of Stephen C. Bemis, died at the Bemis homestead on the corner of Chestnut and Lyman streets at 10:45 o'clock last evening. She had reached the advanced age of 90 years and 9 months, but her death came as a sudden shock to her family. On Tuesday evening she was taken ill with the grip, and later symptoms of pleurisy developed. She soon sank into unconsciousness, and remained in that condition until the time of her death.

Mrs. Bemis traced her lineage far back among the Puritans. She was the daughter of Otis and Keziah Frances Chapin Skeele, and was the eldest of five children. She was born in old Chicopee Street July 11, 1809, and lived there until the time of her marriage. She became the wife of S. C. Bemis on December 25, 1828, and was married by Rev. Dr. Samuel Osgood.

Mr and Mrs Bemis begain their housekeeping at once, and lived for a while in Chicopee, then moving to Willimansett. They lived in that town until 1843, when they came to this city. Mr. Bemis was a prominent figure in this city, and was mayr in 1861-2. He died February 12, 1875.

Mrs Bemis retained to an extraordinary degree the possession of her intellectual and physical powers, though her eyesight had failed in recent years. She inherited in a generous measure the moral earnestness and the deep religious spirit of her Puritan ancestors. She was always cheerful and hopeful, and gave with a generous hand to numerous objects of charity. Her nature was quiet, and she found her greatest delight in her home.

Her birthdays of late had become a time of reunion among the Bemis family, and many Friends had visited her on these occasions. She was the mother of eight children, five of whom survive her: William Chaplin, Thomas Otis, and Henry Skeele Bemis, Mrs W. F. Sturtevant and Mrs Kate C. Gibbs. Besides her children she leaves 17 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.
