Biography

The name is supposed to be of Scandinavian origin and derived from Ingialld. During the ninth century the Scandinavian pirates often descended on the east coast of Great Britain, and in after years many of this nationality made settlements here, especially in Lincolnshire. These people were a hardy sea- faring race owing to the nature of their country, but under changed conditions of environment settled down to tilling the soil. The earliest record found is that of the wall of Henry Ingalls, grandfather of Edmund, and made in 1555, he probably having been born about 1480. The next record is that of Robert the father and made in 1617.

An abstract of both wills are given. The name of Ingalls is still common in England. The etymology of the name is " By the power of Thor." The Doomsday book records a Baron Ingald, a tenant of the King William at Rersbi and Elvestone, Eeicestershire, A. D. 1080, who came from Normandy. ^[1]

Eleazer Ingalls. Born 1661, died 1718. He married in 1683, Mary Hendley, daughter of Elias and Mary Hendley of Marblehead.

He was a Cooper and developed into a merchant and extensive land owner. He died leaving a very large estate, inventoried at œ3707.0.0, consisting of land at Marblehead, Lynn, Dracut, Gloucester and other places.

His father-in-law deeded to him on September 2/1685, a part of their homestead on the sea at Hendley's Cove on Peach Point, at the mouth of Marblehead Harbor, later known as Ingalls Beach.^[2]

Eleazer Ingalls Lot. Parnall Bartoll of Marblehead, widow and admin. of the estate of John Bartoll, deceased, and their eldest son, William Bartoll, with the consent of the rest of the children, being apprehensive of the helpless condition of their son John Bartoll, conveyed this lot of land to her son-in-law William Lightfoot of Marblehead, fisherman, Jan. 2, 1687. Mr. Lightfoot died, possessed of the estate; and his son and administrator, John Lightfoot of Marblehead, mariner, for thirty pounds, conveyed the lot to Eleazer Ingalls of Marblehead cooper, Nov. 15, 1695.† Mr. Ingalls owned it in 1700 Essex Registry of Deeds, book 7, leaf 154.
