Biography

Hugh, born about 1645, was the first surviving son and heir of Sir Hugh Owen, 1st Baronet of Orielton, Pembrokeshire, and his second wife Catharine Lloyd daughter of Sir Evan Lloyd, of Yale, Denbighshire.

The family lived at Landshipping, a family property on the eastern banks of Cleddau [1]

He matriculated at Christ Church, Oxford in 1660 aged 15 and was admitted to the Inner Temple in 1672. [2][3]

1670 Succeeded his father to become the 2nd Baronet of Orielton.

First Marriage 1664: he married Anne Owen, daughter and heiress of his paternal uncle, Henry Owen of Bodowen, granddaughter of John Owen and Dorothy Laugharne. They had 8 sons and 5 daughters. [4]

Through his first marriage he added very considerably to his estate. His second cousin Anne was the only daughter and heiress of Henry Owen of Maesoglen, Anglesey, also heiress of her uncle Colonel Hugh Owen of Bodeon thereby bringing the original Owen estates in Anglesey back to the main line. [1]

Second Marriage c1690: he married Catherine Anwyl, widow of Lewis Anwyl of Park and daughter of William Griffith of Lleyn – no children. [2]

Career

A Welsh politician who sat in the House of Commons of England at various times between 1676 and 1695. MP for Pembroke, 1676-79; for Pembrokeshire, 1679-81 and 1689-95 [2]

Sheriff of Anglesey in 1688.[6]

He died at Bristol on 13 January 1698-9, scarcely a month before his wife, aged 53, and was buried in St Augustine’s church in that city where a marble monument was raised to his memory.[1]

Memorial Inscriptions

Saint Augustine-the-Less Parish Church Cemetery, Bristol. His funeral monument is on the wall of the south side of the chancel of the Church: [8]

Near this place under the black marble grave stone within ye rayle of ye alter is interred the body of Sr Hugh Owen, of Orielton, in ye County of Pembroke, Baronet, who departed this life the 13th Day of January an dmi 1698, Aged 53 years, leaving issue three sons and three daugthers

Underneath this place in a vault lieth the body of Sir Hugh Owen, of Orielton, Kt., Baronet, who dyed August, 1670, aged 66 ; as also his wife Frances, daughter of Sir John Phillipps, of Picton, Baronet. His second wife, Catherine, daughter to Sir Evan Lloyd, of Yale, in the County of Denbigh, Bart., is also interred here.
Sir Hugh Owen, of Orielton, Baronet, son of Sir Hugh Owen, Kt. and bart., above-named, by Catherine, his second wife, died at Bristol the 13th Jany., 1698, aged 53, and lies buried in St. Austin's Church there, where a monument is erected over him.
Anne, his first wife, daughter and heiress to Henry Owen, of Mosoglen, in the county of Anglesey, Esquire, and heiress to Hugh Owen, of Bodowen, Esq., lies also inter'd here. His second wife, Catherine, daughter of William Griffith, of Llyne, in the county of Carnarvon, Esq., died without issue by Sir Hugh in Feby., 1698, aged 50, and by her own desire was interred in St. Twinnel's Church, where a monument is erected over her.
Sir Hugh Owen, Bart., had by Anne, his first wife, 13 children—6 sons and seven daughters—Hugh, Catherine, Harry, Elizabeth, John, Arthur, Wm, Dorothy, Hen., Ann, Wyrriot, Charles, Mary, whereof Jno., Dorothy, and Wyrriot is interred here. Hugh, Harry, William, Henry and Mary died young, and are interred elsewhere

Note, assuming normal naming conventions, there were 8 sons and 5 daughters.
