Biography

Richard Villiers was the elder son of Alexander Villiers (abt.1228-) of Kinoulton, Nottinghamshire; he was of Brooksby, Leicestershire, in 1254. He was a warrior in the service of Edward I.[1]

Research Notes

The first date found in looking at the lineage provided by the Boyle e-mail cited by The Peerage is the death in 1416 of John Villiers,[2] so...

> Richard Villiers (b, say 1220 or so, based on son b c1250 ) and Maud Hyde (born c1230? based on son born c1250ish )
>> John Villiers born, say 1250ish? based on son b c1275
>>>Geoffrey Villiers born, say 1275 or so? based on son b c1300-10
>>>>Sir John Villiers (b, say 1300-10? based on son b c1340 ) and Joan Pakenham (daughter of Simon Pakenham)
>>>>>Richard Villiers born, say 1340? (based on son b c1370)
>>>>>> John Villiers (died 1416) born, say 1370?

Source image attached to profile of Hyde-1908 shows her married first, about 1248, to Thomas Jocelyn (d 1277), and second to Nicholas Villiers. A son by her first marriage, Thomas Jocelyn, was b c1249.[3] If she were 18 at first marriage, she would have been 49 when she was widowed (in 1277). Doubtful she would have had children by Nicholas. The source image also notes that Hide Hall passed to the Jocelyn family with this 1248 marriage of Maud & Thomas.

A source provided on another John Villiers profile - Villiers-109 (d 1346) - shows him with a 2nd son Geoffrey who married Alice (Geoffrey was his heir).[4]

That source has the following line:

Alexander Villiers (d 1245)
> sons Richard and William; Richard "who was of Brooksby in 1254", had 5 sons:
>>Hugh, John, Nicholas (d 11 June 1284, m Maud), ...
>>>Nicholas, son of Nicholas, of age(?) in 1287
