Biography

Francis Baber was the eldest son of Edward Baber, serjeant-at-law, and his wife Catherine Leigh.[1][2][3]

He was educated at Magdalen Hall, Oxford. He matriculated on 6 April 1582, aged 16. He was a student of Lincoln's Inn in 1586.[2]

He married Ann, the daughter of William Whitemore of London.[3] Their children were:

  1. Edward[3]
  2. Francis[3]
  3. James[3]
  4. Elizabeth. She married Richard Hill of Radland, Gloucestershire.[3]
  5. Ann[3]
  6. Mary[3]
  7. Jane

He died on 9 September 1643, aged 78 years and 15 days,[4] and was buried the next day at Chew Magna, Somerset. The burial register records "Frances Baber Esquire the 10 of September [1643]."[5]

His inscription on the Baber family monument in St Andrew's Church, Chew Magna, reads:

Memoriae S. Francisci Baber, de Chew-Magna, amigeri, qui officio Irenarchae com. Somerset. sub Elizabetha Regina, Jacobo et Carolo Regibus, cum laude functus, obijt 9o die Septembris, A. D. MDCXLIII. Vixit annos LXXVIII, dies XV.[4]

Research Notes

There is no record of his baptism in the parish of St James, Clerkenwell, Middlesex, so it is probable he was born elsewhere.
