Biography

Edward was born before 1604 [at Castle Archdale?]. Baptised Darsham, 15 April 1604.

He succeeded to the Fermanagh Estates on the death of his father in 1621. By the inquisition taken at Enniskillen on the last day of February 1623-4 before Sir Paul Gore, Captain Atkinson and others, it appears there were nine tenants on the Archdale estate at Tallanagh.

It seems he had not been in possession when a dispute arose with sir Leonard Blennrhasset, concerning ownership of the island of Crevinishaughey. In an Inquisition (27 April 1629) it was found the Archdale claim encroached upon that of Blennderhasset. However, Edward obtained a re-grant (22 Dec 1629) of several small proportions two in the precinct of Lurg and Coomac Kernan, Tullanagh, and Dromra; he paid twice the original rent on one 400 acre tract, with a fine of £30 for every 1,000 acres. Also the manor of Drumra (Druragh) .^[1]

In 1641 Edward Archdale and others, petitioned the House of Commons against Sir John Dunbar, although the nature is not stated in the Journals

[The Ulster Plantation, a deliberate attempt to transform Ireland into a thoroughly English realm, created great hardship and a festering resentment. On top of this were political tensions which would lead to the English Civil War. This erupted in Ireland as the "1641 Rising". Conor Maguire, Farmanagh's leading rebel was thwarted in a plan to capture Dublin Castle; he was captured and hung four years later. Rory Maguire, his brother, organized a campaign against the planter houses throughout the county. A ruthless and savage conflict followed as the peasantry wrecked revenge on the incomers.]

In 1641, Sir Phelim O'Neill, a supporter of Rory Maguire reached old Castle Archdale (which had been destroyed and rebuilt in an earlier rising). The nearby village of Lisnarick, once known as Archdalestown was destroyed.

The Castle was captured and burned. It is said all of Edward's wife and most of the children were killed, except William (the youngest child). The story goes that he was saved by a faithful Irish Roman Catholic nurse who thrust him out of the window. [She may have survived, some records say William and a women were the only survivors.] An unnamed sister (Barbara?), who was absent at the time also survived.^[2]

Additional Information

EDWARD ARCHDALE, who eposed Angel, daughter of Sir Paul Gore (ancestor of the Gores, Earls of Ross), and had issue. During his time, the castle which his father erected was tekan and burned by the rebels under Sir Phelim O'Neill, in 1641, and only two children of the numerous family survived. One a daughter, who was absent and married; the other, an infant son, WILLIAM, preserved by the fidelity of his nurse, an irish Roman Catholic, which WILLIAM ARCHDALE, after suceeded to the estates, married Elizabeth, daughter of Henry Mervyn, of Omagh Castle and Trillick, both in County Tyrone; and had two sons and a daughter, viz. MERVYN, his heir; EDWARD, heir to his brother: ANGEL. [Lord Belmont notes]

Castle Archdale This castle was built in 1615 by John Archdale, a Plantation undertaker from Suffolk, on the eastern shore of Lower Lough Erne. Its defensive bawn was 66 foot by 64 foot and 15 foot high with flanker towers at each corner. It was destroyed by Rory Maguire during the Rebellion of 1641 as was the nearby village of Lisnarick, once known as Archdalestown. There is a tradition that all but one of the Archdale children died when the castle was set on fire, the youngest boy being saved by a faithful nurse who thrust him out of the window.
