Biography

James was born on November 27, 1919. He was in the army for 4 or 5 years during WWII. In this picture he has sergeant stripes on his uniform so it had to be later in World War II. He was a reporter for the Army newspaper, Stars and Stripes. He worked for Dow Jones & Co. He retired as a writer for the Wall Street Journal in 1985. He passed away on May 13, 2009. [1]

TRURO--James Shute, 89, died May 13 after a long illness. He was the husband, for 66 years, of Catherine Curtis Shute.

He was born in Bangor, Me., the son of the late James Shute and Jennie Hooper. He was raised on the South Shore of Massachusetts.

During World War II, Mr. Shute served in the U.S. Army in the European Theater with the 8th Armored Division. He received the Bronze Star.

Mr. Shute worked for 37 years at Dow Jones & Co. in New York City. In addition to editing the “broad tape,” he wrote a financial analysis column, “Abreast of the Market,” for the European edition of the Wall Street Journal. He and his wife retired to Truro from Ridgewood, N.J. in 1987.

Mr. Shute was a gifted handyman whose hobbies included gardening and carpentry. Above all, he was an avid and discriminating reader.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by sons, James Nevil of Ramsey, N.J., Richard Allen of Surry, Me.; his daughter, Maura Catherine Nichols of Cape Elizabeth, Me; and four grandchildren. A son, Kevin David, predeceased him.

A memorial service will be held on June 20 at 10 a.m. at St. Peter the Apostle Church in Provincetown.[2]
