Mary was born on 28 August 1840 in York, Western Australia.[1] She was the daughter of John Hardey and Elizabeth Davey.

Births—On Friday the 28th. August, last, at Mount Hardey, the lady of J. W. Hardey Esq. of a daughter. On Friday the 4th instant, at Perth the lady of the Honourable the Colonial Secretary of a daughter.[2]
In 1862, she married Edward Graham Barrett-Lennard (1839-1888) in Guildford[3].
She passed away in 1884 and is buried at Guildford Grammar Cemetery[4].
