Elijah B. Treat, 83, one of the most prominent residents of this town, died at noon, Thursday, after 16 weeks illness. He had been a member of the Oxford board of education for the past 49 years and was its secretary 35 years. He was chairman of the Democratic town committee for many years and was judge of the local town court several terms.

He owned a large farm and worked on it up to the time of his last illness, although age had kept him from doing many of the heavy tasks of the farm of late. He was member of St. Peter's Episcopal Church and was its senior warden for a long time. He was a regular attendant at the diocesan conventions.

Mr. Treat took an active part in the Oxford grange. He was formerly Oxford correspondent for The Republican.

He is survived by one son, Atwater Treat of Oxford; one daughter, Mrs. Mary Chatfield of Seymour, and several grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 2:45 p.m. Sunday at St. Peter's church. Rev. H.S. Douglas will officiate. Burial will be in Oxford.
