Biography

Following Burke; Thomas was born 1657 and baptised at Canterbury. [1]

Following Keen; He was probably the son of Thomas Best (d.1666) and Dorothy Lott [2]

He Converted some small tenements, part of Dame Agrippina Bingley's house (in Chatham High Street) into a brewhouse and set up the business of a brewer in a small way with the help of his father in law John Mawdist(l)ey. [2]

He m1. Elizabeth Mawdistley daughter of John Mawdistley Esq. of Chatham and widow of Matthew Thurston. [1] & [2]

1702 death of Elizabeth aged 45. Thomas then married Elizabeth, widow of William Nurse. She died 1736 aged 38 without issue.

The Manor of Eslingham (Æslingham), alias Frindsbury was transferred to him by Gilbert Clerke, esq. of Derbyshire [3]

He was noted as of Cowling (Cooling) Castle. [1]

In 1740 he died. [4]

He was buried at Chatham. His will dated 1737 was proved August 1740.

The Peerage states that the father of Thomas was John Best whilest Kent Archeology states his probable parentage as Thomas Best and Dorothy Lott
