From unknown newspaper, Mar. 18, 1937: Death took from this community one of its most valuable and most esteemed citizens, R.G.W. Girling, Sr., 60, who succumbed at the family residence at 2:25 a.m. today, after a brief illness of pneumonia.
Mr. Girling was a member of an old family. He was born in New Orleans but moved to Pike county early in life. His father maintained the Holmesville estate as a summer home, and this place became Mr. Girling's home upon his father's death.
Mr. Girling's father came to America from England, while his mother came from Ireland.
Mr. Girling had been the rural mail carrier out of Holmesville for the past 21 years. His hobby was flowers, and at his home he grew them in great variety.
He was stricken Monday night and despite all the loving care of family and friends, and every medical attention, he grew steadily worse to the end. Death, following so brief an illness, was a doubly severe shock to relatives and friends alike.
Funeral services were scheduled to be held from the Holmesville Methodist Church at 2:30 p.m. with the Rev. Mr. Saunders officiating.
Surviving are his wife; three children by a previous marriage, R.G.W., Jr., of Holmesville, Mrs. Wallace Cecil(Julia) Blount and Mrs. John Clifton (Louise) Felder, Summit; three younger children, Louis, Helen and Nesta, all of Holmesville; two nieces and one nephew, Helen, Margery and Alvie Beall, and five grandchildren. The J.N. Davis Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements
