Born in Boston 29 Oct 1870.^[1] She was living in Malden, unmarried, in 1897.^[2] She appears in the 1900 census in Malden listed as a music teacher and living with her father and her half sister from her late mother's first marriage.^[3]

Research Notes

According to North American Family Histories, 1500-2000, a James Henry Gleason married a Jennie S. Howe on 19 July 1887. This is supported by the Marlborough 1900 census, which lists a James H. and Jennie S. Gleason married for 12 years. Her mother is listed as born in Maine, which corresponds to this Jennie S. Howe. On the other hand, her birth date is listed as October 1866, which is 4 years off, and the Howe Genealogies say she was living in Malden in 1897, unmarried . Several Ancestry trees incorrectly equate Jennie S. Gleason with Jennie S. Howe.

The clincher is the 1900 census for Malden, which lists a Jacob A. Howe, age 69 living with his daughter Jennie S. Howe, age 28, a music teacher. The name is transcribed as Janice S. Howe, but a handwriting inspection confirms it is Jennie S. Her father is known to have lived in Malden, and although her year of birth is off by 2 years, this is a better fit than the wife of James Henry Gleason. Also in the household is Lizzie Glover, daughter of the late Rebecca Davis (Lombard) Howe and her first husband James Knowles Glover.
