Biography

This profile is part of the Nagle Name Study.

Garrett Nagle was born about 1767 in Rathcormack, County Cork, Ireland. He died on 07 Jun 1851. He married Honorah Monaghan about 1807 in Ireland.

Unknown- July, 1823. In both Griffith’s Evaluations- on failteromhat.com and Ireland Valuation Office Books, a Garrett Nagle is listed as the Occupant of Tenement house #8 on Mill Street, Terramount/ Knockaduff, Village of Rathcormack. The house size was 28’x19’x7.6’. It was evaluated at 1P, 6S, 4P. The suggested Tenancy Rate was: “ 2P Ground Rent & built by self.”

In griffiths.askaboutireland.ie, this same house is listed as: ‘Unoccupied’ and part of the same groupings of a Flour Mill and housing owned by Dennis Cummins.

Rathcormack was a small village in the early 1800s. Terramount is a tiny adjunct, outside the town. As this was the emigration point for Garrett Nagle & family and as he was in life a “ cart & wheelright, in circumstances little better than beggary” (to quote Garrett in 1828), there can be little doubt, this is where the family lived.

In addition, at this small Rathcormac habitat, the following other Nagles are listed: David of Quarter Lane, James of Carey’s Lane, John of Bridge Street. Undoubtedly related, but brothers?

1823 - On July 8, 1823, immigrated from Rathcormack, Cork near Fermoy, Ireland on the ship Hebe, led by Peter Robinson. [1]

"a second notable addition to settlement in Ramsay township, including locations near Carleton Place, was made by a southern Ireland group migration in 1823. They came chiefly from the County of Cork. Selection of these settlers in Ireland was superintended by Peter Robinson (1785-1838), Upper Canada government official, who accompanied the emigrants to Ramsay township and remained here for a time to arrange their establishment. Their inland journey from Prescott was by way of Franktown and Carleton Place to their settlement depot set up at the site of Almonte. Among many others were the Thompson, Teskey, Dulmage, Corkery, Foley, O’Brien, Haley, Nagle and Young families. "[2]

On September 3, 1823 Garrett & Honorah Nagle and their children, further proceeded to their New World home, from Quebec City to Montreal via the Lady Sherbrooke, along with 278 fellow Irish immigrants from the Hebe, as well as their ship Surgeon, Dr. Dixon. Theshipslist.com

Peter Robinson, through his 1824 report to the authorities in Upper Canada, completed the journey as follows:

"We reached Montreal on the 6th and finding the means of transport ready, I forwarded the emigrants by land immediately without stopping in Montreal to La Chine distant ten miles- There we remained two days and then set out in boats to Prescott, the crews of each consisting chiefly of emigrants with two Canadians to guide & steer- Notwithstanding the rapidity of the River and unskilfulness of the men few of whom had ever been in a boat we got to Prescott on the 15th .

On the 18th I left Prescott and proceeded across the Country in Waggons to the Mississippi River, a distance of about fifty miles and arrived on the 22d. Here I found that orders had already been given by His Excellency I.Perigrine Maitland to afford me every possible facility in placing my people on such lands as were vacant & grantable in this neighbourhood.

The Township of Ramsay which the Mississippi intersects appeared to be exceedingly eligible, but I found that rather more than one half had been settled three years before by Scotchmen from the neighbourhood of Glasgow-

The adjacent Townships Huntley, Goulbourn & Pakenham were also partially settled by disbanded soldiers & others- Being anxious to settle my people as near each other as possible, I determined to examine carefully what lands remained in these Townships at the disposal of Government, & fortunately I found a sufficient number of vacant lots fit for settlement- I therefore located in the Township of Ramsay eighty two heads of families, in Pakenham twenty nine, in Bathurst one, in Lanark two, in Beckwith five, in Goulbourn twenty six, in Darling three, and in Huntley thirty four- Making in all one hundred and eighty two." P.Robinson, Report to Upper Canada in http://obrienr.idirect.com/probin.html

After their settlement near Blakeney, On, Garrett & his sons pursued work in the profitable White Pine timber industry, which were used in English ship building. By 1835, Garrett had obtained a licence and was able to build a small, profitable, water generated saw mill near the Norway Pine Falls. [3]

1835 - received his land patent at Lot 27, Concession 10, Township of Ramsey. [4]

Burial: Saint Michael's Roman Catholic Cemetery, Corkery, Ottawa Municipality, Ontario, Canada[5]

  • Today, September 11, 2020, I Francis Nagle, downloaded a couple of pics of the original foundation of the Garrett Nagle family homestead. I had come to the confluence of the approximate location of Blakeney & Panmure Roads, near Mississippi Mills, ON, went down one of them towards a Dead End and stopped at a random house with owner on the porch. After some opening remarks and as God is my witness he said:

“ You know, there‘s a really old (>150 year old) remnant of the foundation of a home here. I knew nothing about it, but always thought someone would come down the driveway one day and ask about it! 😝🍾 It’s about 3 minutes away. Would you like to see it?” On June 30, 2023 GGGGrandsons- Francis & Patrick Nagle, GGGGrandaughters- Colleen Nagle Lambert, Christine Nagle Dickinson and Maureen Nagle Short and some of their family members, returned to the site to take pictures, obtain a small sample of the remains and drink an Irish Whisky toast to Garrett Nagle & Honorah Monahan and family.

  • It would appear that on January 2, 1805 a son (Joannes) was born to Garrett and HONORA Monaghan. This John would have been the first child of the couple, throwing off the Marriage dates to the 2 sisters Monaghan. Certainly, not appearing in the 1823 voyage to the New World. Of course, he might have died during the immediate years post birth and in the Irish Catholic tradition, his brother John T. was named. Page 38 of Rathcormac Parish Records of the nli.ie
