Max von Schmaedel actually: Max Ritter und Edler von Schmaedel (born May 14, 1856 in Augsburg; † 1939 [1]) was a German portrait and genre painter.

Schmaedel studied from October 1873 painting in Munich at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts as student of Max Adamo, Karl von Piloty and Alexander von Wagner. [2] After graduating, he worked in Munich. In 1879 he traveled to the USA. On 31 August 1879 he reached aboard the "S.S. Samaria" the port of Boston, Massachusetts. [3] In New Bedford, Bristol County, Massachusetts on October 15, 1879 he married Louise Cécile Beauvais (1854-1882). [4] [5] In 1880, he returned with his wife back to Germany , where their son Harold Parker von Schmaedel was born on May, 3rd 1881. His wife died on June 17, 1882. Schmaedel was again established from this time on in Munich at different addresses, as is apparent from the information provided by the Munich-based address books to 1938 [6]. [7] [8]

Schmaedel was repeatedly proven represented during 1888-1891, with his works in the Munich Glass Palace; as well as his works displayed in the catalogues of art exhibitions [9]. He also presented his works at the exhibitions of the Royal Academy of Arts in Berlin. He was a member of the General Association of German Cooperative Art. [10] Schmaedel's works were in the majority portraits or genre scenes.

Max Ritter und Edler von Schmaedel died in 1939,although his exact date and place of death remains unknown. His son Harold Parker Ritter und Edler von Schmaedel (1881-1932), known in Germany as Harald, was after visiting the Munich Maximilian Gymnasium and the Munich Art Academy, also a painter. Max was brought up as a member of the Evangelical Lutheran Church.
