James Tillinghast Archer was born on May 15, 1819 in South Carolina. He was the son of Hugh Archer and Susan Tillinghast.
James Archer was a lawyer and also had a career in politics. He was Florida's first Secretary of State, serving from 1845-1848. He also served as the Florida Attorney General in 1848.
