Nothing is yet known about Mary's birth or her marriage to Joseph, except that the marriage must have taken place between 1870 and 1875 (based on the census entries from those years).
The following obituaries appeared in the local newspapers:
It is possible that Dorn was an anglicization of her maiden name. There are 41 entries for Marie with a date of 11 November 1846, and 35 for the day before, but none seem to fit with the name Dorn.
No records have been found for the birth of any of the children of Joseph and Mary. Their existence is known through various US and NY censuses:
Child | Born | 1870 | 1875 | 1880 | 1900 | 1905 | 1910 | 1915 | 1925 | 1930 |
Josephine | 1869 | * | * | * | Doren (adopted) | Flood | * | * | Flood
Minnie | Jun 1870 | * | Mary | |||||||
Malvina | 1872 | * | * | |||||||
Nelly | 1873-4 | * | * | |||||||
Emma | Apr 1879 | * | * | * | * | * | * | Emily
Frederick | Aug 1881 | * | * | |||||||
William | Jun 1884 | * | * | * | * |
For Emma, Frederick and William the birth dates are taken from the 1900 census, however these cannot be taken as reliable as the date for Josephine is Jan 1771 when she was alive for the 1870 census. Minnie was one month old at the 1870 census.
Daughter Mary/Minnie died on 26 March 1876[3].
At the 1910 census Mary reported that she had given birth to five children and all were still alive. This could be understood if Josephine was adopted, as noted in the 1900 census, and if the death of Minnie/Mary was forgotten.
The name Josephine Doren, as given in the 1900 census, could be a clue as to Mary's maiden name - Doren, not Dorn as stated in one of the obituaries. Perhaps Josephine was the daughter of a brother or an unmarried sister. However, this has not led to any potential records. At some stage Josephine must have married Louis Flood, and they are living with Mary at the 1905 census. One possibility for the name is Dorion - Joseph's step-brother, Felix, married Zoe Dorion about 1860.
