Biography

Josias Bracken Canning Alexander was born 12 Dec 1826 to Josias Du Pré Alexander and Mary (Bracken) Alexander.

In 1841 Josiah Alexander (age 14) lived Near the College in Eton, Buckinghamshire, in a household of Eton students.[1]

Josias Bracken Canning Alexander married Agnes Cecilia Curtis on 11 Jan 1848 in St Marylebone, London. The marriage was registered in Marylebone in the first quarter of the year.[2] It was a double marriage with Agnes' sister Julia: "At St. Marylebone, Henry-Charles, eldest son of H.D. Scott, esq. of Eccleston-st. to Julia-Henrietta; and at the same time, Josias-Bracken-Canning, younger son of the late J.D. Alexander, esq. of Stone-house, Broadstairs, to Agnes-Cecilia, daus. of the late Sir William Curtis, Bart."[3]

Josias and Agnes had eighteen children:

In 1851 Mias B C Alexander (age 24, Fundholder) lived in Shoreham, Kent with his wife Agnes C (22), son Josias W (1), daughter Agnes M (0), visitor Robert L Braughton (34, Solicitor), and six servants: Mary Bearcroft (27, Nurse), Mary Breeze (35, Cook), Maria Hurdle (25, House Maid), Susan Medhurst (18, Nursery Maid), Peter Russell Adams (49, Butler), and Thomas Breeze (32, Coachman).[4]

In 1861 Josias B C Alexander (age 34, Merchant) lived at The Acacias in Burnage, Lancashire with his wife Agnes C (32) and nine children: Agnes M (10), Jesses L (9), Frederick (8), Caroline (6), Atwell (3), Henry (1), Horace (1), Charles (0), and Gertrude (0), as well as Governess Emma Silvester (41), and nine servants: Mary Bearcroft (35), Sarah Large (35), Mary Pearson (36), Ellen Hudley (25), Martha Macross (31), Mary A Kerbride (18), Ellen Newas (18), Elizabeth Bredey (16), and John Mebray (30).[5]

In 1871 Josias B C Alexander (age 44, Stock & Cotton Agent) lived in Knutsford Superior, Cheshire with his wife Agnes C (42) and nine children: Agnes M (20), Lessie L (19), Caroline J (16), Madelina L (7), Ellen A (6), William M (5), Lucy G (4), Edward S (3), and Constance M (0), as well as four servants: Mary Gettring (53, Nurse), Emma Lythgere (21, Under Nurse), Mary Eccleston (24, Cook), and Susan Williams (23, Housemaid).[6]

In 1881 Torcas B C Alexandra (age 55, Agent & Broker) lived at Penrhyn Terrace Stretford Road in Stretford, Lancashire with his wife Agnes Cecilia (52) and seven children: Hersery T (26), Gertrude Mary Ann (20), H C (22, Clerk in Post Office), Charles (20, Clerk in Bank), Madelina L (17, Trent College Student), Cristanie M (10, Scholar), and W M (15, Trent College Student), as well as servant Ellen James (23, Cook).[7]

Josias Bracken Canning Alexander passed away on 17 Oct 1882, aged 56 years. His death was registered in Barton Upon Irwell, Lancashire in the last quarter of the year [as Josiah Bracken Alexander].[8]

An obituary was published on 21 Oct 1882.[9]
