Biography
Barbara was born April 4, 1888 in Deutschland.[1]
She married Rudolph Wertheim in Deutschland. They were Jewish immigrants who moved to England about 1907 and promptly converted to Christianity.[2]
In 1911, Babette was married to Rudolf Wertheim, and they were living at 5, Cleve Road, Hampstead, with their two children. Rudolf, age 29, born Russia, was a bank manager, while Babi his wife was age 22 and born in Germany. Their daughter, Charlotte was age 3, and their son Nicholas age 1. Also in the household was Rudolf's brother in law Emil Wertheimer, age 19, a grain merchants clerk, born in Germany, and a visitor to England [3]
Barbara and Rudolph had three children, Charlotte, Nicholas, and Robert. They anglicized their last name by changing it to Winton in 1938.[4]
During the time leading up to World War II, Barbara was a key participant in a plan masterminded and carried out by her son, Nicholas, in which he rescued Czech children from certain death at the hands of the Nazis by emulating the Kindertransport program that was moving children from Germany and Holland to England, where they were cared for in foster homes.[5]
The 1939 register showed Barbara living at The Grange, Portsmouth Road, Haslemere, Surrey, her date of birth was recorded as 4th April 1888, and she was a widow, with no occupation stated [6]
Barbara died between October 1, 1978 and December 31, 1978 in Hendon, Middlesex, England.[1]
