Biography

John Bragdon, the junior of that name in his native town, was born -- based on his stated age of 70 at the time of his death in 1862 -- about 1792, presumably in that part of York County, Massachusetts Bay, that later (1820) became Kennebunk, Maine; he was associated with this place throughout his lifetime. He is thought to have been a son of John Bragdon and Dorothy (Larrabee) Bragdon, who resided in the part of Wells that was eventually incporporated in Kennebunk.

John married first, Mary "Polly" Hutchins, at Kennebunkport in June of 1821. Widowed in the fall of 1824, he married second, at Kennebunk, Almira Larrabee, in late February of 1825; whether the couple had offspring, or whether there were children of John's first marriage, has not been certified to date (April 2021). In the household of John and Almira in the 1850 and 1860 U.S. Censuses, however, appears Elizabeth C. Larrabee, understood to be a niece of Almira -- presumably, the daughter Elizabeth, born in 1834, of Almira's brother James and his wife Eunice.

John's death record contains the quotation (from an unspecified source, but presumably a military record), "'Vol. in 2d Mass Reg. Co B.'", presumably dating from service in the War of 1812, he would have been nearing 70 at the start of the Civil War. He died of consumption at Kennebunk in mid-February of 1862, and was buried in Kennebunk's Evergreen Cemetery -- as was Almira five years later, in the early spring of 1867.

Research Notes

John Bragdon is assigned the middle initial "W." in the cemetery record of his first wife, Mary "Polly" (Hutchins) Bragdon.^[1] The initial does not appear in other records and the full name it represents is not known to date (April 2021).
