Vere Awdry was born in 1854 at Chippenham, Wiltshire, England. He was a son of John Wither Awdry and Frances Ellen Carr. He was baptised at Lacock on 28 November.[1] His father was a retired Indian judge and his mother had been born in Bombay.[2]
He married (1) Margaret Emily Man on 3 August 1887 at Beckenham, Kent, England, United Kingdom. She was the daughter of Frederick Man and Elizabeth Emily Dumas. They had a daughter:
Margaret passed away in 1889, 11 days after giving birth.
In 1891 he was living at Broad Hinton, where he was the vicar, with his daughter Hildred, his widowed sister Sarah Walford and her son Cecil. He also had servants including a nurse for Hildred.[3]
His daughter passed away between the census and his 2nd marriage.
Vere married (2) Mary Louisa Man, Margaret's cousin; on 27 October 1891 at St. Leonards, Sussex, England. They had 2 children:
In 1901 he was living at Ampfield, Hampshire with his wife, son and a different sister, Frances.[7]
Mary passed away in 1908.[8]
Vere married (3) Lucy Louisa Bury in 1909 at Winchester, England.[9] They had 2 children:
In 1911 he and his new wife were living at Ampfield Vicarage, with only a young servant Jessie Hinton to help out.[10]
Vere passed away in 1928 at Chippenham.[11] His beneficiaries included his wife, Edmund Portman Awdry and Neville John Awdry (interestingly, very distant cousins - common ancestor Ambrose Awdry b. 1693, their grandfather was Peter Awdry)[12]
