Jesse Morgan "Jess" Stovall

Birth: 4 Dec 1910 in Musselshell, Montana, USA
Death: 19 Dec 2004 (age 94) Bozeman, Gallatin County, Montana

Jess attended school through the eighth grade in Musselshell. After school he taught himself to break horses. During this time he joined the Civilian Conservation Corp (C.C.C.), and worked at the Squaw Creek Camp as the Lead Fall Worker on the road around the west shore of Hebgen Lake, Gallatin County, Montana.[1] He also worked on roads to Wade and Cliff Lakes. When Jess had no work in the C.C.C. he stayed in the Gallatin and Madison Valleys, broke horses, and general ranch work. He was a working cowboy and was the Foreman at the B Bar K Ranch (now Lone Mountain Ranch) when he was drafted into the Army at the onset of World War II. During the war he served in the field artillery, and saw combat in Okinawa and the Philippine Islands. After the war Jess was a guide for the Nine Quarter Circle Ranch. In 1947, Jess met Joan at a dance at the Corral Bar and they were married in 1949. After his marriage to Joan, Jess worked for the railroad, until an accident left him partially disabled. During this time Jess helped to develop a machine to shoe horses; he did a lot of horseshoeing and cattle trimming. Jess was a hard-working man who always had a project going. He built a cabin in West Yellowstone in 1963. This was to be the family get-away on Hebgen Lake. Later it became the family home.
