Christened, Cristobal de Naharriondo Perez Onate y Cortez Moctezuma.
Great-grand-son to Hernan Cortez and great-great-grand-son of Moctezuma, Emperor of the Aztec.
In 1598, he was part of his father's expedition into New Mexico. He was about 10 years old and commissioned as Lieutenant. Dressed in complete armor for himself and his horse, he is listed among the soldiers.
While his father went out on an expedition, Cristobal acted as Governor.

En la villa de San Gabriel de la Nueba Mexico, ante el señor Xpistobal de Oñate, tinjente de gouernador, en primero dia del mes de diçienbre deste año de mjl y sejsçientos y quatro se presentaron los contenidos y se leyo:
Todos los que aqui firmamos en nonbre de la billa pedimos y suplicamos al señor don Cristobal de Oñate tenien- te de gobernador y capitan general deste egersito que en el entretanto que el señor governador don Juan de Oñate su padre viene que para la quietu desta villa y egercito pedimos y suplicamos sea serbido de despachar y echar desta billa a Juan Lo- pes Olguin al pueblo de San Felipe que es el gusto de nuestro padre fray Juan de Escalona que sea alli y no en otra parte y para que coste que asi lo pedimos y firmamos.
